ABOUT

Coach Jeff – Founder

When I was in high school, the internet wasn’t what it is today. I was stumbling through most of my exercise efforts blind. As a self-conscious soccer player, I basically hid whenever we had to lift weights with the football team at school. Instead, I’d take a Green Day or NOFX CD out to my garage and do nothing but bench press. I didn’t know the importance of working other muscles. I wasn’t even sure which muscles I was working! I just knew bench press was...a thing...that people do.

A decade later, the internet had come a long way, but it didn't really benefit my fitness endeavors. There was almost too much information available, a lot of it contradictory and confusing. I’d spend hours on YouTube looking for the right workout, but by the time I found one, I’d be too exhausted to get moving. I resorted to running as my sole source of activity; it was the only thing I felt confident doing.

Eventually I discovered and fell in love with indoor cycling classes but still felt like a fish out of water. Determined to carve out a place for myself (and my music), I became an instructor as quickly as I could. As it turns out, my unique themes and playlists resonated with a lot of riders, and for the first time, I started to feel like I wasn’t alone in the fitness world.

A few years later, a friend finally introduced me to proper strength training. I knew my cycling clients needed this in their lives, and I wanted to be qualified to guide them through it. In the process of becoming an NASM certified personal trainer, I was surprised to learn about other crucial areas of training I’d been neglecting (or doing wrong) my whole life, like core, flexibility, and balance.

I can’t go back and lead myself down a more efficient and less frustrating path, but with Misfits of Fitness, I can do that for you. Let's get started today!

Fitness shouldn't be a subdivision or a "scene."

Everyone needs exercise for optimal health and mobility. Fitness, in and of itself, shouldn't belong to any particular crowd.

Yet, at least in my experience, fitness always seemed inaccessible – like another planet. It’s not that I necessarily even felt unwelcome there; I just didn’t feel at home, didn’t feel comfortable – didn’t feel like I fit in. But I liked being active and I wanted to take care of my body, so I tried to do it myself...and I was completely lost for a long time.

It wasn’t until I decided to become a fitness professional that I found my way. But even then, I kind of felt like an outsider – and still do! At first I thought it was just a matter of taste in music, but it’s bigger than that.

First of all, I take issue with fitness marketing that capitalizes on people's insecurities and guilt – reinforcing unhealthy relationships with food and exercise. Even when that's not the case, I find that most fitness brands just don't speak to me. Most gyms – even the really nice ones – don't feel like home. If you've ever felt the same, I want you to know: You fit in here.
